ALOHA, the plant-based nutrition brand with a cult following, has just dropped a new taro protein bar  not only fueling workouts but feeding a deeper mission: supporting Indigenous youth, regenerative agriculture, and the sacred roots of Hawaiian food culture. And yes, it tastes like mana in a wrapper.

In a snack market flooded with vague claims and chalky textures, ALOHA’s taro bar is the rare bite that actually means something. This isn’t just another protein pick-me-up. It’s a love letter to kalo, the Hawaiian word for taro and a bold move to put ancestral crops and community empowerment front and centre.

The new bar blends taro with a plant-based oil made from pongamia trees grown on Oʻahu’s North Shore. If that sounds wildly specific, it’s because it is and deliberately so. ALOHA isn’t just tossing around the word “local” for marketing buzz. They’re putting money where the land is, sourcing from regenerative farms and funneling proceeds back into youth development programs on the islands.

In a market obsessed with superfoods, taro is the original overachiever. Rich in fibre, potassium, and cultural significance, kalo was once the lifeblood of Hawaiian society feeding bodies, stories, and lineages. ALOHA’s move to bring it to the US mainland isn’t just strategic, it’s restorative.

“We wanted to honour the land, the people, and the power of native crops,” the company says ,noting the taro bar is part of a broader effort to weave sustainability and social impact into every product line. They’re calling it a ‘purposeful protein experience’  and frankly, it’s refreshing to see a bar brand that’s not just jacked up on pea isolate and colourful slogans.

For the record, it’s also pretty damn delicious. Creamy, earthy, lightly sweet - like if a root vegetable got a degree in nutritional science and went to the Burning Man festival.

So next time you’re state-side and in the functional foods aisle, reach past the usual cookie-dough clones and pick up something with a little soul. ALOHA’s taro bar isn’t just a snack, it’s a statement. A reminder real nourishment has roots.
