Coles Supercharges Online Grocery Game with Ocado Partnership

#earthhack After nearly two years of delay, Ocado has finally launched Coles Australia's first robot-picking facility. The Aussie food giant is ramping up its virtual shopping business through this multi-million dollar collaboration, which aims to revolutionise the online shopping experience. With Ocado's state-of-the-art automated single-pick fulfillment technology and online grocery platform, more than 1,000 robots are now hard at work doing the 'picking'.

The partnership has led to the establishment of Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs) in Melbourne and Sydney, revolutionising the way groceries are stored, picked, and delivered. These facilities represent a substantial investment in technology and infrastructure, focusing on automation and efficiency to better serve the Australian market. The Truganina CFC in Melbourne, the first of its kind in Australia, and features advanced robotics and AI-driven systems is designed to make the online shopping experience seamlesss.


Coles' initiative offers customers a broader range of products with improved availability and freshness (including fresh vegetables), aiming to meet the growing demand for online grocery shopping with more flexible delivery options. The automated technology allows for rapid picking of items, significantly reducing the time it takes to process orders and enhancing the overall customer experience.

Coles CEO, Leah Weckert, says the company is excited by the facilities finally becoming operational. "The opening signals a major step change in our online grocery deliveries that will offer our customers greater choice, better availability, improved freshness, and more flexible delivery options. We sought the best global technology in the world to re-imagine the Coles Online experience here in Australia."


This modernisation is expected to double Coles' home delivery capacity across Australia, enabling them to handle more orders with increased efficiency and at a lower operational cost. It's a strategic response to the shifting consumer preferences towards online shopping, a trend seeing significant growth globally. Ocado partners with Marks and Spencer (M&S) in the UK.
