New Zealand has exported avocados to Australia for over 30 years, supplying as much as 14% of Australia's needs. However, with Australia’s domestic production on the rise, New Zealand exporters are now focusing on diversifying their markets. The New Zealand avocado industry is ready to welcome improved export volumes this season, aiming to distribute around 2 million trays across Asia and North America, with Australia and Pacific Islands taking a smaller share. Despite this, the industry has struggled with fluctuating export values, which dropped from a peak of NZD 167 million in 2020/21 to just NZD 20.29 million in 2023/24.
In contrast, Australia’s avocado export market has seen significant growth. In 2024, the export value reached about AUD 91.1 million, up from AUD 58.75 million in the previous year. Over the past three years, export volumes have surged by approximately 600%, totaling 21,979 tonnes and accounting for 14.56% of Australia’s total avocado production. The Australian government is advocating for market access to China, recognising the vast potential of the Chinese market for Australian avocados. Additionally, Japan, the largest importer of avocados in Asia, presents significant potential for Australian exporters.
The Asia-Pacific region presents significant opportunities for both New Zealand and Australia. Rising middle-class populations, increased health consciousness, and the popularity of Western cuisines have led to a surge in avocado demand across countries like Japan, China, and South Korea. By leveraging their geographic proximity and reputation for high-quality produce, New Zealand and Australia are well-positioned to meet this growing demand.

To capitalise on these opportunities, both countries are investing in market development and promotional activities. Emphasising the unique qualities of their avocados, such as superior taste and sustainable farming practices, can help differentiate their avos in competitive markets. Collaborations with local distributors, participation in trade shows, and targeted marketing campaigns are among the strategies being employed to enhance their presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
The global avocado market's upward trajectory offers promising prospects for New Zealand and Australia. By focusing on market diversification and strategic promotion in the Asia-Pacific region, both countries can secure a substantial share of this expanding market, ensuring sustained growth for their respective avocado industries.
