Move over oat, almond, and soy, corn milk is muscling its way into the plant-based milk scene. Yes, you heard that right - milk made from corn. While it might sound unconventional, this golden alternative is gaining traction as a sustainable, allergy-friendly, and nutrient-rich option for those seeking to shake up their non-dairy routine.

So, who’s bringing corn milk to your coffee? Companies like US/South African company Maízly is leading the way. Maízly, a small but ambitious startup, has developed a creamy, slightly sweet corn milk marketed as perfect for smoothies, cereal, or sipping straight. It has also launched a corn based infant formula in South Africa. Meanwhile, EverGrain, better known for upcycled barley ingredients, has hinted at diversifying into corn-based beverages to expand their sustainable portfolio.

What makes corn milk stand out? First, it’s a crop with a smaller water footprint than almonds or rice, addressing sustainability concerns. Secondly, its naturally sweet taste means fewer added sugars compared to other plant milks. And for anyone with nut or soy allergies, it’s a safe option that’s free of common allergens.

But how will it impact the already crowded plant-based milk sector? Industry experts predict corn milk could carve out a niche without toppling oat or almond milk from their thrones. Instead, it may lure in consumers seeking novelty or alternatives for dietary reasons. However, some sceptics question whether it will overcome challenges like branding, pricing, and convincing customers to pour corn milk into their flat whites.

For now, corn milk is a curiosity worth keeping an eye on. As consumers increasingly crave innovative, eco-conscious choices, this golden newcomer could very well make a lasting mark.

So, are you ready to add a splash of corn to your morning routine? Let’s see if it pops.
