Is This The Future of Surfing as KOZ Uses Natural 3D Mushroom Technology to Craft Boards?

In a radical '360' redefining sustainability in the surfing world, French startup Koz Surfboards is using natural 3D mushroom technology to create eco-friendly surfboards.

The idea first 'mushroomed' in the mind of surfer Thibaut Fournel in 2017, inspired by an article on mycelium’s potential for sustainable packaging. Somewhat captivated by this organic material, Thibaut Fournel embarked on a journey of research and experimentation, eventually leading to the creation of his first mycelium-based surfboard prototype.

This innovative approach caught the attention of the Initiatives Maritimes de Lorient in 2020, where Koz Surfboards received both the Audelor Award for support and the Plastimo Public Prize, validating Fournel’s vision of blending advanced technology with nature.

Koz Surfboards officially launched in October 2023, embodying a radical shift in surfboard

manufacturing. Their unique process can be likened to a natural form of 3D printing, using no electricity. Instead, they combine plant waste with mycelium in a mold, which then undergoes a maturation process. This results in a solidified base for the surfboard, offering the same performance surfers expect but with a significantly lower environmental impact.

As Koz prepares to launch its first pre-series this November, the brand is wanting to make a significant impact with it's 'Earth Friendly' innovation. With plans to open pre-orders by December, Koz is set to make waves not just in the water but in the sustainable design community as well.

Already progress is being made using mycelium in shoe and leather production.

By transforming fungi into functional art, Koz Surfboards is championing a new era where surfing and sustainability are intertwined, proving nature and technology can coexist harmoniously to create something really quite remarkable .
