The 2024 New Zealand Vegan Pie Awards, organised by the Vegan Society of New Zealand, have revealed a veritable pie-warmer of the nation’s top plant-based pies.
Jason Hay, Master Vegan Pie maker and proprietor of Ellerslie based, Richoux Patisserie and his family are celebrating this morning after walking away with an astounding six awards in this years competition with his Cheese Burger pie taking out the Supreme Award.

Supreme Winner:
Richoux Patisserie – Cheese Burger Pie
Judges' comments: “So innovative! A fantastic concept, well-executed! A tasty pie! Beautifully cooked pastry—home to a yum surprise!”
According to Jason Hay the secret, without doubt, lies in the pastry and the flavour combinations.

The Fairlie Bakehouse were the other winners picking up two awards.
Vegan Mince and Cheese:
Winner: Fairlie Bakehouse

Vegan Steak and Cheese:
Winner: Richoux Patisserie's Jalapeño Steak and Cheese

Gluten-Free:
Winner: Fairlie Bakehouse's American Pumpkin Pie
Judges' comments: "Nice pastry, tender and golden. Well-balanced filling with a nice spice level."
Sweet:
Winner: Wild Grain Patisserie's Vegan Peach, Blueberry, and Passionfruit
Judges' comments: "Presentation and appearance beautiful. Tender pastry with an abundant filling."
