LeaderBrand Sweet Corn Hits Stores Early After Record Spring

The unmistakable taste of a Kiwi summer is arriving early this year, with New Zealand's LeaderBrand sweet corn hitting supermarkets two weeks ahead of schedule, thanks to a record-breaking spring on the East Cape of the North Island.

LeaderBrand, which has been growing corn for over 20 years, prides itself on delivering top-notch produce. Each cob is hand-harvested to ensure optimal quality, then chilled to below 5°C within hours to lock in freshness. At the peak of this summer season LeaderBrand expects to pick upwards of a million corn cobs a week.

The early arrival of sweet corn is a welcome addition to festive meals, as the vegetable is a Kiwi favourite, known to surpass strawberries in popularity during its season.

Typically expected around Christmas, the first corn cobs, planted in early August, are ready now, marking the earliest harvest in years. General Manager of Farming, Gordon McPhail, (shown below) credits the hot, dry weather for this early bounty.

“This spring has been exceptional, with high temperatures and long days providing perfect conditions for our corn and melon crops,” says Gordon McPhail. “Sweet corn thrives on heat, and this season’s crop is particularly creamy and sweet.”

Corn's versatility makes it a standout choice for summer feasts. Carmel Ireland of 5+ A Day highlights its health benefits, noting, “Corn is not just delicious, it’s packed with antioxidants, fibre, folate, and vitamin C, making it a nutritious addition to any diet.”

To enjoy sweet corn this festive season, try it grilled on the barbecue, slathered in Vutter, or as a vibrant ingredient in summer salads. For the freshest pick, look for cobs with dark green husks, full kernels, and golden-brown tassels.
