LILO Plant-Based Desserts Redefining New Zealand's Food System & Taking on Sara Lee

As the iconic Australian dessert brand, Sara Lee brand finds its way again after going into voluntary liquidation and new ownership last year, New Zealand’s LILO plant-based desserts is stepping up, not just to fill the gaps in the single serve market, but also redefining Kiwi food systems.

LILO is on a mission to change how we view food production and consumption, standing firm in the belief it’s their responsibility, as part of a connected global village, to improve the food system for future generations.

LILO, standing for "Last In, Last Out," embodies this generational responsibility. The brand emerged from years of research and innovation, seeking to leverage New Zealand’s world-renowned, high-quality Central Otago cherries, apricots, the iconic Kiwifruit and blueberries.

New Zealand’s unique climate and soil produce fruit with some of the highest levels of antioxidants and polyphenols, making them not just delicious but naturally superior. Yet, a significant percentage of this fruit goes to waste due to the outdated focus on exporting only perfect-looking produce.

In New Zealand, 9% of methane emissions come from food and organic waste, much of it including premium fruit never making it off the orchard. LILO saw this as an opportunity, not just to reduce waste but to transform it into a range of supercharged, supernatural snacks. Starting in a cherry orchard in 2018, LILO listened to the challenges faced by growers and began developing innovative, delicious recipes turning imperfect fruit into globally consumable desserts.

LILO’s plant-based desserts are already making a significant impact, earning a spot on Air New Zealand’s outbound vegan and vegetarian menu and grabbing interest from other international airlines. "Off the back of their support and endorsement, with special thanks to the LSG Sky Chefs dream team in Auckland, we are now supplying our fruity desserts on all outbound Qantas and United flights as well! We're excited to have our revalued fruit desserts mission backed by some of the biggest airline platforms in the business", says Lilo's social media pages. This endorsement further solidifies their commitment to sustainability and global impact.

By focusing on reducing waste (plastic free compostable tub and sleeve), improving margins for growers, and 100% 'Earth Friendly', LILO is not just about taking market share from Sara Lee and gaining international exposure, but also setting exciting new standards for the dessert industry.
