Magpye A Plant-Based Pie Phenomenon Surviving The Times

In the vibrant culinary scene of Newcastle Upon Tyne, where food is celebrated for its quality and innovation, featuring a mix of traditional British pubs, contemporary restaurants, and international cuisine, there is one stand-out surviving the tests of time.

Magpye Founders Chris and Sarah Fryer

A really remarkable story of resilience and innovation is being written by Magpye, a plant-based pie company defying the odds. Founded in 2019 by Chris and Sarah Fryer (shown left), Magpye started modestly from their kitchen, quickly establishing a reputation for exceptional vegan plant-based pies made with lots of heart and sustainable practices.

As the company celebrates its fifth anniversary, Magpye has grown from its humble beginnings to a beloved brand with a physical store in the historic Grainger Market. This expansion not only demonstrates the brand’s popularity but also its commitment to sustainability sprinkled with lots of local community engagement. The Fryers have introduced a vegan deli range and continue to support local businesses by stocking plant-based cheeses and a variety of locally produced condiments.

Magpye's journey was nearly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, yet through agile adjustments and a national marketing campaign, including a feature in a GoDaddy TV ad, the company not only survived but thrived. Their pies, known for their palm oil-free pastry and use of organic, regeneratively farmed flour, and picked up three prestigious British Pie Awards, an amazing feat considering Great Britain is the spiritual home of the humble meat pie.

The Fryers have not stopped at just creating delicious pies. They are active participants in the ecological movement, with recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable packaging, and ethically sourced ingredients. Magpye has also tapped into the sports sector supplying pies to the eco-friendly Forest Green Rovers FC, showing they really do care about their community and the environment.

Magpye's success story is not just about good food; it's about making a difference through sustainable practices, their plant-based products and forging strong community ties. As they offer a 15% discount to celebrate their anniversary, it’s clear Magpye is set for many more years of success, crafting pies as kind to the planet as delightful to the palate.
