MAHA - Putting Plant-Based Proteins First!!

The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA) are advancing major updates to the 2025 Dietary Guidelines, with significant emphasis on plant-based expected from the incoming administration under President-elect Donald J. Trump.

Speculation is rife that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent advocate for health and environmental reforms, will assume the role of Secretary of Health, where he could influence America’s dietary direction.

Central to these proposed guidelines is a stronger emphasis on plant-based proteins. The Advisory Committee has recommended reclassifying legumes, like beans and lentils, as "protein" rather than "vegetables," promoting them as key nutritional staples comparable to meat.

Additionally, a restructuring of the "protein foods" category could place plant-based options like nuts, seeds, and soy at the forefront, ahead of meat, eggs, and seafood.

These changes align with Kennedy’s long-standing push for healthier, environmentally sustainable food systems. Known for his advocacy for public health, Kennedy vows to champion initiatives shifting societal norms toward viewing plant-based proteins as essential to a balanced diet. This would bring the U.S. in line with countries like Germany and Denmark, both successfully updating their dietary guidelines to promote plant-based nutrition.

As the final recommendations approach their early 2025 publication, the Kennedy-Trump dynamic will be closely watched. Supporters hope that, under Kennedy's influence, Americans will embrace healthier and more sustainable dietary practices, benefiting public health and reducing environmental impact.
