Medicinal Mushroom Market Expands as Functional Shrooms Hit TESCO UK

The medicinal mushroom market is gaining significant momentum as functional mushrooms, once a niche wellness product, now find their way onto the shelves of major supermarket chains like UK's Tesco.

Brands such as the Scottish, Love Mushrooms are leading the shift, launching their range of organic tinctures and capsules in over 250 Tesco stores across the UK. These functional mushrooms, including varieties like Lion's Mane, Reishi, and Cordyceps, all recognised for their cognitive, immune, and stress-relieving benefits.

Research continues to reveal the potential health benefits of these mushrooms, contributing to a global market expected to grow from $61.33 billion last year to $94.57 billion by 2028. Tesco’s commitment to offering functional mushrooms at affordable prices, such as with Love Mushrooms' permanent 3-for-2 Clubcard deal, is also helping drive mainstream appeal.

In Australia and New Zealand, the medicinal mushroom market is also experiencing significant growth. Australian brands like Life Cykel, established in 2015, have become leaders in the medicinal mushroom space. Life Cykel offers a variety of tinctures made from Reishi, Lion’s Mane, and Cordyceps, and has expanded internationally. Organic Farmacy, another key player, focuses on 100% Australian-grown mushrooms, ensuring high-quality products free from contaminants often found in imported varieties. Other brands like Inner Atlas and Earth Labs also offer organic, lab-tested mushroom extracts promoting cognitive health and immunity. Medicinal mushrooms are not currently available at either Woolworths or Coles, Australia.

New Zealand is contributing to the trend with brands like Mynd, (shown above) which is using native species such as Pekepeke-kiore for cognitive health. Other Kiwi brands include Down To Earth Mushrooms , Flow State and Medi Mushrooms.
