In a remarkable development in the plant-based milk sector, Força Foods has launched MILKish, touted as the world's first watermelon seed milk. This innovative product marries sustainability with nutrition, setting a new benchmark for dairy alternatives.
Watermelon seeds, often overlooked, are proving to be a superfood in their own right. Força Foods, a Latino-owned company based in California, pushes the environmental benefits of these seeds. They boast a water footprint 99 percent lower than that of almonds, making them an exceptionally sustainable choice.

MILKish diverges from traditional plant milks by excluding common allergens and additives such as soy, gluten, nuts, sugar, carrageenan, artificial colors, and flavors. Instead, it features a blend of pea protein and watermelon seeds. The product line offers an Unsweetened Vanilla and an Unsweetened Original flavour, both available in a six-pack on Força's website. The company has plans to expand availability to retail stores soon.
Each serving of MILKish contains just 50 calories but is rich in nutrients, providing 35 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calcium and vitamin E, 10 percent of vitamin D, and 6 percent of potassium.
The environmental and nutritional advantages of plant-based milks have been highlighted in a 2023 scientific review in the journal 'Nutrients'. The study concludes that fortified plant-based dairy alternatives can maintain the nutritional quality of diets while significantly reducing environmental impact.

Other companies in the plant milk sector are also making strides in sustainability. Oatly has introduced an XL carton to reduce packaging per liter, and Milkadamia has introduced the first-ever flat-packed oat milk, reducing packaging waste by 94 percent. Meanwhile, Califia Farms' new "Complete Kids" line blends peas, chickpeas, and fava beans, offering a highly nutritious option for younger consumers.
As the dairy-free market evolves, innovations like Força's MILKish highlight the industry's commitment to sustainability and health, paving the way for future developments.
