NZ’s Craft Soda Scene Just Got a Shake-Up and It’s a Zesty One

If you’ve been watching the rise of functional sodas and non-alcoholic drinks, here’s another splash of good news. In a move that just makes sense, Six Barrel Soda, the Wellington, New Zealand-based indie darling of craft soda, has been snapped up by St Andrews Limes, a Hawke’s Bay company with a knack for citrus-based brilliance.

Before you panic, Six Barrel isn’t about to lose its small-batch charm. The brand will keep fizzing away as an independent soda maker, but now with a bit more muscle behind the scenes. St Andrews Limes already supplies the lime and lemon juice for Six Barrel’s syrups, so this is less of a hostile takeover and more of a natural evolution - think of it as a well-carbonated collaboration finally going official.

For the uninitiated, Six Barrel Soda has been the go-to for restaurant-quality mixers, funky syrups, and its cult-favourite sugar-free Seltz Drops. Meanwhile, St Andrews Limes has been quietly perfecting the art of no/low sugar sodas, dressings, and condiments. Now, with the two coming together, expect even more bold, locally sourced flavours hitting the shelves.

“Six Barrel Soda founders have created a legacy business, by using their craftsmanship and creativity, to build an outstanding syrup company,” says Matthew Day, who co-owns St Andrews Limes with his wife, Tracy. “We are delighted to continue building an enduring brand and company that stands above the rest.”

The deal officially goes through on March 31, 2025, and with a new Hawke’s Bay soda factory and cellar door in the works, fans of good, clean fizz have plenty to look forward to. Watch this space, this next chapter could be the zestiest yet.
