Move over, dairy. Marine Whey has arrived, and it’s making a splash in Portugal.

Kiwi-born startup NXW (Nutrition from Water) has just cranked up its game, setting up shop near Faro with the operational firepower to churn out a hefty 100,000 kilograms of Marine Whey per year. And if that doesn’t say “serious business,” maybe this will - their facility is just ten minutes from Nazaré, where yesterday’s surf was a towering 20 feet. Coincidence? Hardly. NXW is riding its own kind of wave.

For the uninitiated, Marine Whey is whey without the cow, a protein powerhouse derived from microalgae. It’s got all the good stuff, complete amino acids, clean taste, no allergens and none of the baggage. No methane, no monocultures, no old-school dairy drama. Just sustainable, ocean-powered nutrition for a planet in need of smarter protein.

Unicorn Factory Lisboa

NXW’s CEO Alex Worker in Lisbon this week, is rubbing elbows with Unicorn Factory Lisboa—because if you’re scaling a 'game-changing food tech company', that’s the place to be. But next week? Dubai. NXW is now part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Innovation Fund, diving into the MENA region’s massive demand for affordable, sustainable nutrition.

“This milestone is more than just a facility. It’s about stepping up to the plate and delivering the future of nutrition at scale,” says Alex Worker. “We’re no longer talking about what’s possible, we’re making it happen.”

NXW’s expansion into Portugal isn’t just about supply chains and logistics. It’s a signal that the future of protein isn’t coming, it’s here. And if you’re not paying attention? Well, just like those Nazaré waves, it’s going to hit before you know it.
