Rainstick Mimicking The Power of Lightning Fueled by Thousands of Years of Aboriginal Wisdom

In the quest to feed 10 billion people by 2050, innovative solutions are literally inspired by the power of lightening. Rainstick, an agri-tech startup from Cairns, Australia, is tapping into ancient aboriginal knowledge, combined with cutting-edge technology, to boost global food security.

By mimicking the power of lightning, the company has developed a unique method to stimulate plant and fungi growth, all inspired by traditional practices from outback Aboriginal communities.

Rainstick’s co-founders, Darryl Lyons (Chief Rainmaker- Far Left) and Mic Black (Chief Thunderstorm Creator-Left) - arguably some of the coolest titles in tech - have built their innovation on ancestral wisdom. Darryl Lyons, a proud Maiawali man, draws from his heritage where his people were known as rainmakers who influenced weather patterns.

The company uses a system called Variable Electric Field Treatment (VEFt) to create bursts of electricity, mimicking lightning and boosting crop yields up to 20% faster and more sustainably.

The technology uses minimal energy, running even on solar power, and enhances crops like mushrooms, wheat, and rice. By increasing germination rates and biomass, Rainstick’s method helps address the mounting pressures to reduce fertilisers and pesticides worldwide.

As Mic Black says, the drive behind their work is simple but critical: “Do you eat?” Their innovation has significant implications, offering a way to produce food resiliently amid changing weather patterns and global food demands.
