Solein Takes Another Step Closer to Mainstream with Ajinomoto’s New Brand Launch in Singapore

Japanese food manufacturer, Ajinomoto, has introduced two new products in Singapore under its new conscious brand, Atlr.72. The launch features 'protein from air' Solein-powered traditional Flowering Mooncakes and Icecream Sandwiches. The collaboration brings this novel protein a step closer to full commercial use.

This launch stems from a strategic partnership between Solar Foods and Ajinomoto, which began last year. The goal is to pilot Solein-powered products in Singapore, where Solein has already received approval as a novel food ingredient. The launch of Atlr.72 reflects Ajinomoto’s focus on meeting the increasing demand for healthy and environmentally conscious food products.

The Traditional Flowering Mooncakes and Ice Cream Sandwiches incorporate Solein as a dairy alternative, offering a protein-rich option with a reduced environmental impact. Ajinomoto's new brand, Atlr.72, plans to expand its range beyond sweet treats to everyday foods in the future.

Solar Foods' Factory 01, which began operations in April, supports the commercial-scale production of Solein, making it feasible for the protein to reach a broader market.

“Ajinomoto’s launch marks an important milestone on our journey to renew existing food categories and reduce the environmental impact of food production. It’s a major step for the commercial use of Solein as our new factory is now ramping up its production, paving the way for the introduction of Solein to people’s plates”, says Solar Foods CEO and Co-founder Pasi Vainikka.

Solein is produced using a bioprocess involving fermenting a microbe found in nature with air and electricity. It is a versatile and nutritionally rich ingredient replacing or enhancing protein content in various foods. With ongoing production efforts, Solein has the potential to be introduced in additional markets, including the U.S., where it may soon achieve GRAS status. (Generally Regarded As Safe).

The limited-edition Atlr.72™ products will be available at Ajinomoto’s pop-up stores in Singapore’s Takashimaya and One Holland Village, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival.
