A tiny native plant tucked away in New Zealand's wilderness could hold the key to relieving chronic pain and inflammation. Known as Radula marginata, this liverwort produces a cannabinoid called perrottetinene (PET), a compound similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. But here's the catch: PET is milder, offering potential therapeutic benefits without the same psychoactive punch—making it a hot prospect for future medical applications.

So, what makes Radula marginata special? PET has shown anti-inflammatory properties, which researchers say could be a game-changer for people living with conditions like arthritis, chronic pain, or even neuroinflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Dr. Richard Espley of Plant & Food Research has been quoted as saying, “This is an opportunity to develop a natural alternative that’s effective but gentler on the system than THC.”
But don’t expect Radula marginata products on pharmacy shelves just yet. As a native species classified as “At Risk – Declining,” strict conservation efforts are underway. A Charitable Trust formed by three foundation iwi has stepped in to protect the plant, while also exploring sustainable ways to harness its potential. They aim to ensure that any future commercialisation benefits both the environment and local communities.

Experts suggest it could take at least five years before Radula marginata-based products are ready for clinical trials, and longer still before they reach consumers. Partnerships with pharmaceutical or wellness companies would likely be key to scaling up production. The plant’s unique cannabinoid profile could position it as a premium ingredient in global health markets.

In the meantime, the focus remains on sustainable research and development. For health-conscious consumers eager for natural remedies, Radula marginata offers hope—but also a reminder that preserving biodiversity is critical to unlocking nature’s healing potential.
