UK 'Mom & Pop' Indian Family's 'Shicken' Hits the Jackpot with Costco US

The plant-based food scene is getting a spicy makeover as the British Indian family-owned brand, Shicken, expands its reach to one of America's largest retailers, Costco with 617 stores. This expansion follows Shicken's amazing success in Costco UK and its recent foray into Sprouts Farmers Market in the US earlier this year.

Shicken's Great-Taste Award-winning Tikka Kebab is leading the charge, as the only UK plant-based brand to secure shelf space in Costco's US stores. This follows an impressive performance in the UK and European Costco markets, where Shicken's offerings saw a 15% sales increase last year.

"Generations of our family have inspired us to deliver the finest plant-based products, with flavours that promise the authenticity of traditional Indian cuisines and more to come," says Parm Bains, Co-Founder of Shicken. The brand's commitment to using natural, fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques allows them to offer a taste of India's rich culinary heritage in a convenient, sustainable form.

"We are thrilled about our launch in Costco US. This is a significant step towards broader coverage in the US and potentially other global markets," says Pam Bains. The initial launch will cover Costco stores in the Northwest, with ambitions to expand across the entire chain, which could potentially rake in over $40 million in sales revenue.

Matthew Glover, Co-Founder of Veganuary and Veg Capital, is not surprised by Shicken's expansion. "The dishes taste incredible, and their commitment to quality and innovation in the plant-based sector is unmatched. Landing a US listing with Costco is a testament to the brand's potential and the start of an exciting global journey," says Matthew Glover.

The success story of Shicken started in a family kitchen during the 2020 lockdown, quickly gaining the attention of Veganuary's campaign and securing a significant investment from Veg Capital.

"The last year has shaped the future of our business, allowing us to secure more shelf space and develop innovative products," adds Pam Bains, hinting at upcoming expansions into other world cuisines and allergen-free offerings. Who knows Australian Costco's 15 stores may be next to stock the Shicken range.
