Morrisons, the UK's fourth largest supermarket chain, is pushing for a shift in the grocery industry by testing higher freezer temperatures to reduce energy use and costs. The supermarket chain is raising the temperature of its freezers from -18°C to -15°C in 10 stores across the UK, a direct challenge to a nearly century-old industry standard.

This trial, supported by major brands including Birds Eye and the Move to Minus 15°C Coalition, aims to evaluate the impact of this change on energy efficiency and food quality.
Research has shown that increasing freezer temperatures by just 3°C can reduce energy consumption by 10-11% without compromising food safety or quality.

The potential benefits are significant. A broader adoption of this practice across global supply chains could lead to energy savings equivalent to 8.6% of the UK's total energy consumption and a reduction in carbon emissions comparable to removing 3.8 million cars from the road.
For Morrisons, savings could help keep prices low for customers while contributing to the company’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2035.
This trial marks a crucial step towards modernising industry practices and aligning them with current environmental and economic needs.
